Because emotions are part of your body too!

At TLC Pediatrics, we understand that growing up isn’t always easy. Between school pressures, friendships, social media, and life’s daily changes, children and teens can sometimes feel overwhelmed. Emotional struggles don’t mean something is “wrong” — they mean your child needs understanding, support, and tools to cope. We’re here for that. In fact, our providers include mental health screening and evaluation as part of routine well visits to help families identify and manage concerns early.

When Worry Becomes Anxiety

It’s normal for children to feel nervous before a test or shy in new situations. But when worry becomes constant, intense, or starts to interfere with school, sleep, or social life, it may be anxiety. According to the DSM-5, anxiety disorders often involve excessive fear or worry, physical symptoms like stomachaches, headaches, or trouble sleeping, and strong reactions to everyday situations. At TLC, we help identify what’s driving the anxiety and teach healthy ways to manage it — whether through counseling, coping strategies, or coordination with behavioral health specialists.

When Sadness Becomes Depression

Everyone has bad days, but when sadness lasts for weeks, or a child seems to lose interest in the things they used to love, it could be depression. The DSM-5 describes depression as a pattern of persistent low mood, irritability, tiredness, changes in appetite or sleep, trouble concentrating, or feelings of hopelessness. Our goal is to help children find light again — through careful evaluation, compassionate
listening, and personalized treatment plans that include therapy, lifestyle support, and, when needed, safe medical management.

Coping with Eating Disorders

Eating disorders can develop in children, preteens, and teens, sometimes even before adolescence. These conditions often stem from a mix of emotional, environmental, and genetic factors. Warning signs can include meal avoidance, restrictive eating, excessive concern about body image, unexplained weight loss, or slowed growth.

If you have concerns about your child’s eating habits or body image, bring them up during your visit. Our team offers referrals for therapy, nutritional counseling, and ongoing support to encourage healthy development.

Our Approach

At TLC Pediatrics, we take a whole-child approach to emotional wellness. We screen for depression, anxiety, and related challenges during visits, and follow up with families to make sure care continues beyond the exam room. Dr. Patty — trained in Pediatric Behavioral Health through The REACH Institute — works hand-in-hand with our team, families, and local therapists to ensure every child gets the right support at the right time. We know these issues can feel heavy, but you don’t have to face them alone. We’ll listen without judgment, explain every step clearly, and stand by your family as your child heals and grows stronger.

If you’re worried about your child’s mood, anxiety, or behavior, please call (203) 855-7551 or email [email protected] to schedule a consultation. At TLC Pediatrics, we’re here to remind you — it’s okay to ask for help, and hope is always within reach.
